Comparison of Structural Performance Between Steel Sheet Pile and Soldier Pile H-Beam as Temporary Earth Retaining Systems in Basement Excavation Using Finite Element Analysis

Abstract

The construction project of a high-rise apartment with three basement levels in the densely built area of Alam Sutera, Tangerang City, requires a temporary earth retaining system that meets both stability and deformation criteria. This study compares steel sheet pile and soldier pile H-Beam systems as temporary retaining structures for an excavation depth of approximately ±9.45 meters. The analysis was performed using the finite element method through PLAXIS 2D software, considering both short-term (undrained) and long-term (drained) conditions. The applied loads included active earth pressure and a surface surcharge of 10 kPa. The results show that under short-term conditions, both systems satisfy stability requirements, with safety factors (SF) of 1.771 for the steel sheet pile and 1.781 for the soldier pile H-Beam. The maximum lateral deflections recorded were 24 mm and 18.72 mm, respectively, both within the allowable limit of 0.5% of the excavation depth. In the long-term condition, both systems exhibited safety factors below the minimum requirement of 1.3, indicating the need for additional reinforcement—struts for the steel sheet pile and tieback anchors for the soldier pile system. From a flexural capacity standpoint, both systems were confirmed to safely withstand the maximum induced moment. This study concludes that both systems are viable as temporary retaining solutions under short-term conditions, with the need for reinforcement in long-term applications.
